The Village Kitchen is an on-site culinary arts vocational training opportunity for the residents of Good Shepherd Center and also a bakery, café and catering service which is open to the public. This program enables our residents to obtain skills and work experience for employment in the food and beverage industry. Our program is structured as a balance between an operating retail business and a training/work experience program offering the women a basic culinary arts curriculum.
During the three-month program, the women learn how to prepare baked goods, salads, soups and savory dishes, and receive training in customer service and kitchen safety and sanitation. The women receive hands-on experience preparing meals for The Village Kitchen’s dine-in, take-out and catering customers.
Each trainee is required to take a class and then tests to receive a Prometric Food Handling Certificate. This is a necessary pre-requisite for positions in the food services industry.
At the conclusion of program, the women are well-prepared for a variety of culinary arts positions.
